Why aircrafts crash? Lessons we can learn from aviation safety

The School of Human and Community Development will host Dr Nicklas Dahlstrom, Emirates Airlines Human Factors Manager and Visiting Professor at Lund University in Sweden, for an Umthombo Public Lecture entitled Why aircraft crash – Lessons we can learn from Aviation Safety.

Aircraft crashes often provide enough drama to make us think about how safety is something that is always at risk of being taken for granted. Where increased use of advanced technology was once seen as the way forward to increased safety, the limitations of  this approach has been recognised. This has led to increased attention on the human contribution to safety and how it can be optimised. Gradually the leading role of the topic of "Aviation psychology" or "Human Factors" in the aviation industry has led to the same field being introduced in other industries such as shipping, nuclear energy production, the chemical industry as well as health care operations. In this public lecture Dr Nicklas Dahlstrom, Human Factors Manager at Emirates Airlines, will provide an introduction and overview to some of the current issues for Aviation Safety as well as safety in any industry, with a special focus on how Human Factors and Crew Resource Management training can be used to address these issues.
