Its time again for the Ashraf Lodewyk Memorial Basketball Tournament held annually at Wits. The tournament is held in commemoration of Ashraf Lodewyk, a dearly departed fellow student and teammate. Ashraf Lodewyk (also known as “Ashie”) was a psychology student and basketball player at Wits. He was a charismatic, passionate, committed and loyal individual. He was loved by his friends and sometimes loathed (because of his popularity).
Ashie had the ability to make an impression on you after meeting him for the first time. It was the quality driven by his passion that allowed him to make such a big impact on those around him. Ashraf died tragically in car accident almost eight years ago. He was an active member of the Wits Basketball Club and a player on the first team at the time, but still managed to cater to the smooth running of Basketball Club events, 1st team games and his friendships. Testament to this was the fact that while Ashie was an administrator, the Wits Basketball Club was not only the most recognised and well supported club on campus and but also in Gauteng.
