UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Seminar on reasoning

The School of Statistics and Actuarial Science hosts Dr George Damianov, Head of Advanced Analytics and Modelling at Standard Bank at a seminar entitled Reasoning under uncertainty. The talk will first cover the deductive reasoning principles leading to certain knowledge, mentioning the Hilbert programme, the Godel’s incompleteness theorems that dealt a fatal blow to the Hilbert Programme, and then the formalisation of the Probability Theory, opening the way to the Mathematical Statistics. It will then cover the inductive reasoning principles as the reasoning in the real world, leading to uncertain knowledge, what is uncertainty, and when an uncertain knowledge becomes useful. Finally the quantification of uncertainty by means of Statistics will be covered.
