The Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics invites you to two lectures by Prof. Steven Miles, expert witness in the Health Professions Council of South Africa case against apartheid-era germ warfare expert Dr Wouter Basson. The lectures are quite topical as Dr Basson is currently embroiled in a case fighting charges of unethical and unprofessional conduct before a professional conduct committee of the HPCSA.
Miles is an expert in medical ethics and an advocate for human rights. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School and a Faculty member at its Centre for Bioethics.
He is also a practising physician who has served as Chief Medical Officer for a Cambodian refugee camp, amongst others. Miles has published widely on a range of health and healthcare related topics, including Oath Betrayed, a book based on the profound betrayal of traditions that have shaped the medical corps of the US armed forces and of America’s abdication of its leadership role in international human rights.
The first lecture, entitled Personal Reflections on Giving Testimony in the Basson Matter, takes place on Monday, 2 April 2012 from 13h00 in the Len Miller Lecture Theatre, 9th Floor, Wits Faculty of Health Sciences, 7 York Road, Parktown, Johannesburg.
The second lecture, entitled Doctors and Crimes against Humanity, takes place on the same day from 18h00 in the same venue.
If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Vivienne.Rowland@wits.ac.sa or (011) 717-1017.
