Walmart, a successful resolution

The Walmart/Massmart merger brought into sharp focus the controversy that can occur when public interest concerns arise in competition law. The merger was approved with conditions by the Tribunal and later taken on appeal to the Competition Appeal Court, but was dismissed. Should Government and the unions be providing a red carpet for the largest employer in the world? How will this merger impact on local suppliers?  The Mandela Institute at Wits Law School is presenting a workshop aimed at attorneys and advocates, economists, academics and practitioners to consider an economic and legal analysis that will develop a deeper understanding of the issues involved in the Walmart/Massmart case. The workshop structure will comprise presentations and a panel discussion led by leading practitioners and economic experts from the Competition Commission, attorneys firms, and a representative from Massmart Holdings.
