The Mandela Institute in the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is convening an international conference on the subject of Globalisation and Governance on 14-16 October 2010. The Governance Conference is designed to consider, analyse and evaluate current trends in the governance of the global political economy and their implications for governance of the nation-state and the contemporary corporation. Based on the assumption that the financial, economic and social crises of 2008 and 2009 involved failures in all areas of governance, the conference will examine existing structures of government, emerging systems, and likely or preferred future arrangements. It will consider methodologies for measuring good governance in the light of principles of participation, accountability, effectiveness, responsiveness and fairness. The conference will explore the themes of continuity and discontinuity in the governance systems, bringing cross-disciplinary perspectives to bear on all topics. Given the topicality of the themes to be discussed, we plan to produce a major scholarly publication out of the conference. The Governance Conference 2010 aims to bring leading experts in the fields under discussion to the African continent. It is also designed to showcase to overseas participants South African scholarship and expertise in corporate and constitutional governance, as well as that of other countries in the region.
The Mandela Institute was established in 2002 with the objectives of developing knowledge and capacity for South African and African engagement in the changing global economy. To this end it conducts academic courses, short courses, public lectures and conferences and engages in research projects relevant to its objectives.
