Wits Film & TV Student Samkelisiwe Mkhoba to Star in MTV Shuga

- Dylan

MTV Shuga was first launched in 2009 and is part of an MTV Base initiative called “MTV Staying Alive Ignite!” which was created to promote responsible sexual behaviour from young people on the continent. Shuga takes the form of a soap opera and its previous seasons took place in Kenya and Nigeria respectively.

For their fifth season, they have moved the show to South Africa, harnessing the energy of  our home turf of Braamfontein, rebranding the show as MTV Shuga: Down South. Wits Film and TV fourth year student Samkelisiwe Mkhoba will be starring as teenager Khensani, who is “looking for love and finding it in the wrong places,” as Samkelisiwe describes it.

“As an aspiring director I have taken the opportunity to learn from our 3 directors on set namely Mmabatho Montsho, Rea Rangaka and Thabang Moleya. By observing them in their diversity and individuality I hope to find my own identity as a director. I also hope to star in many more films such as Shuga as it is a show which promotes the awareness of human behavior regarding sexual activities and precautions,” says Samkelisiwe.

She is in good company. This season she will star alongside seasoned actors like Clint Brink, and hip hop star Kwesta. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o starred in the first season. A sign of things to come for Samkelisiwe perhaps!
