Breaking the Steel Wall
- By Wits University
The effects of large-scale industrial pollution in the Vaal area are recorded in a documentary by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies.
The documentary, titled Breaking the Steel Wall, features the struggles of the Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (VEJA), a community-based organisation who have been facing the effects of large-scale industrial pollution for many years.
The film tracks VEJA's use of access to information as a tool to fight environmental injustice assisted by their lawyers at the Centre for Environmental Rights.
The film was the result of a collaboration between Wits Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), the South African Human Rights Commission and One Way Up Productions. This was the pilot project for CALS’ interdisciplinary law and film tool, which seeks to incorporate film and media into the human rights work.
Available in isiZulu and English, the documentary can be used as an interactive advocacy tool to promote the use of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA).
