Witsies with the economic edge

- By Buhle Zuma

Wits’ young bright economic minds have continued to dominate the finals of the Nedbank and Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition.

Six Witsies are among the 20 finalists from the country’s universities vying to be crowned the winners of the prestigious competition aimed at budding economists. Winners of the 2014 challenge will be announced in February by the Minister of Finance after the national budget speech. The winner of the undergraduate category will walk away with R30 000, while R150 000 is up for grabs in the postgraduate category. Essay entries are judged on academic excellence and the ability to respond to the set topic relating to economic issues. In 2013, Wits led with 11 finalists while its closest competitor had six finalists.
