"Why I am moving back to South Africa"

Internationally renowned scholar and author, Dr Jonny Steinberg joined the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research this year as part of Wits’ Distinguished Scholars Programme

In a moving written piece on Buzzfeed.com, Steinberg writes about his decision to exchange the tranquility of Oxford for his birth place and the metropolis that is Johannesburg; as well as the man who inspired inspired him to write his new book, A Man of Good Hope.

Steinberg is the author of several books about everyday life in the wake of South Africa’s transition to democracy. He has twice won South Africa’s most prestigious literary prize, the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award, and was an inaugural winner of the Windham-Campbell Prizes for Literature awarded by Yale University.
