New frequency, wider reach for VOW FM

- By Wits University

In the last five years VOW FM has been hard at work providing competitive, relevant and innovative programming to the University community and surrounding areas. Limited by the reach of its low power broadcast signal, the station’s focus was hyperlocal. In the background the station was lobbying and engaging with the relevant stakeholders and authorities to find a solution to the limited coverage it experienced in order to bring the full radio service to its community.

After a four and half year process, numerous technical trials and countless meetings the station was granted a new five year license in December 2014.

“It is with great excitement that we are able to officially announce that Voice of Wits has moved its frequency to 88.1 FM from 90.5FM. The move sees the station able to cover the Johannesburg metropole and some areas beyond thereby enabling Witsies to tune in from home, while in transit as well as on campus,” says Mike Smurthwaite, Station Manager.

VOW FM provides programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week which includes a diverse range of music from 6:00 to 18:00, specialist music programmes in the evening after 20:00 and award winning talk programmes (18:00 – 20:00 on Monday to Thursday).

The talk offering includes a Science show on Mondays, a Legal show on Tuesdays, a current affairs programme on Wednesdays as well as a Business show on Thursday nights.

Wherever you are, you can now tune into your station Voice of Wits on 88.1FM and be part of the community.
