Students Mining Engineering Society

SMES stands for the Students Mining Engineering Society. It is a society for the students of the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. SMES is run by a committee which is elected by the members at the AGM held every year in August/September.

The committee is headed by the Chairman, who is also elected, and consists of 10 members. Additional members may be co-opted as required. SMES is governed by a constitution, which is registered with the SRC (Students representative Council) of the University.

What does SMES do?

SMES is the co-ordinating body for various events participated in and activities undertaken by the mining students. These include the annual Rag Magazine selling, the Rag Float procession, inter-Faculty sports such as rugby and soccer, annual sports day with the mining students from Tukkies (University of Pretoria), annual sports events with WUMEA (Witwatersrand University Mining Engineers Association - the past students/graduates society), and an annual sponsored Golf Day. SMES also runs the students "common room", better known as The Orehouse. This is the scene of many a raucous social function - the less said about that the better!

But SMES is not only a social and sporting society. SMES also assist with arranging additional tutoring for the junior students, assists students with integrating into university life (which can be very daunting for some first year students), provides support and encouragement, and assists mining students in developing life skills (such as organising an ITC public speaking course).

SMES also produces a regular newsletter for the mining students - other students peruse it at their own peril! This gives news of the doings of the students and the Department, as well as providing some light relief in the form of jokes and cartoons.

SMES and the Sponsors

SMES receives very generous sponsorship from industry. Sponsors include companies that supply the mining industry with mining machinery and equipment, blasting technology, rock support products, etc. The sponsorship allows SMES to field well-equipped sports teams in the inter-Faculty leagues, enter a well-built float in the Rag procession (the Miners Float was the winning float in 1997), hold a very successful annual Golf Day to which staff of the mining industry are invited, and of course, the social highlight of the mining student s life - the Miners Ball.
