Dr Arturo Mendoza Ramos: Director of the Mexican Studies Centre

Dr Mendoza holds a PhD in linguistics from UNAM. Since 2018, he has coordinated and directed academic and cultural activities between UNAM and higher education institutions in South Africa. In 2018, he was appointed senior visiting researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he also teaches Spanish as a foreign language. In 2019, he received the Alfonso Caso medal for academic merit on his doctoral studies. He is a full-time associate professor affiliated with the National School of Languages, Linguistics, and Translation (ENALLT) at UNAM. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers. His fields of research and interest are English Research for Publication Purposes (ERPP), language testing and assessment, and blended language learning in virtual environments. He has participated in numerous national and international congresses, and as a keynote speaker on the topics of language assessment and the state of assessment of Spanish as an additional language.

He has published academic papers in several peer-reviewed journals and has also co-authored four pedagogical books for teaching Spanish as a foreign language. He currently teaches Spanish at the School of Literature, Language and Media at Wits, and the advance module on language assessment at the National School of Languages, Linguistics and Translation at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Dr David Ruiz Guzmán: Cultural and administrative officer

Ph.D. in Education from the University of Baja California. Master’s in Teaching for Higher Secondary Education in Spanish (With Honors); and Bachelor´s in English Teaching, both degrees from the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

He is a 20-year-experienced-professor in English as a foreign language and has held various positions within the UNAM. He has participated in numerous forums, conventions, and colloquiums, nationally (as an organizer, coordinator, and spokesman) and internationally (as a speaker at TESOL 2016 and 2018). He has produced multiple courses and materials for students and teachers in both formats, printed and digital (platforms). Moreover, he has provided fundamental ideas for UNAM language policies, not only for the English language but also for native languages such as P'urhepecha at ENES Morelia. He has published in national and international journals and he has produced textbooks for English teaching as a foreign language. He has been honored with medals for his teaching merit such as the "30 upcoming Award", (Baltimore, TESOL 2016).

He currently works as the Administrative and Cultural Officer of the Centre for Mexican Studies at UNAM South Africa, located in Johannesburg City, since May 2018.
