In terms of the SA Copyright Act No. 98 of 1978 (as amended), authors have specific exclusive rights over their original works for a certain period of time (i.e. the lifetime of the author plus 50 years from the end of the year in which the author dies). They also enjoy moral rights, i.e. to be named as the author of the work and to protect their works against mutilation, distortion and even plagiarism.
Authors also have the choice on how their works may be used. Wits has therefore introduced an Authors’ Addendum to assist scholarly authors in retaining certain rights for teaching and research purposes, including depositing their research and other publications in our institutional repository called WIReDSpace. For information and how to deposit copies of publications, visit WIReDSpace.
