Philosophy

The Master of Arts in the field of Philosophy is a 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time course by Research only.

Overview


Philosophy MA (Course work) students are required to complete three 7000-level units (50%) and write a research report on a topic of their interest of up to 30 000 words (50%). 

A student's choice of units and of topic for research report is subject to the approval of the Postgraduate Co-ordinator and the Faculty of Humanities Higher Degrees Committee (Masters).

Entry Requirements


The usual prerequisite for admission to the MA Course work Programme is a good second class pass in Philosophy Honours (or its equivalent). However, those who have earned marks weaker than this may apply and will be admitted on a discretionary basis.

  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.
  • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
