The Fassler Gallery

John Fassler was a member of staff for more than 30 years and was head of the department of Architecture for 20. During the time, he devoted himself to building up the department into one of the best in the country. His design work on the Wits campus includes the Dental School (now WITS School of the Arts), Senate House (now Solomon Mahlangu House), and the lawns and large pool of the Central Campus.

In August of 2012, the School of Architecture and Planning opened the John Fassler Gallery in his honour, with an inaugural exhibit including Fassler's drawings, sketches and watercolours, followed by an exhibit of the work of Pancho Gueddes, a renown architect who served as the head of the architecture department from 1975-1990.

Today, the gallery is used to exhibit contemporary work by both students at the school and the profession. We hope that the gallery will become more than an exhibition space, but also a tool for teaching.
