What is an Alumni Chapter?

A chapter is any regional, town or city based group of Wits Alumni and friends of Wits who want to formalise their relationship to Wits. A chapter offers opportunities for continued friendship with fellow alumni and continued engagement with Wits. A chapter is an extension of the Wits Alumni Association.

What is the purpose of a Chapter?

• Provide opportunities for alumni to socialise with each other
• Coordinate local alumni activities and events
• Provide networking opportunities for alumni
• Promote membership of the Wits Alumni Association
• Serve as an official contact for the Office of Alumni Relations and the University

How can I form an alumni chapter in my area?
The first step in forming a chapter is deciding whether or not you are willing to serve as the Convenor of the Chapter. Convenors organise local alumni and keep them connected to Wits. As a convener you would be responsible for the overall operation of the chapter with the assistance of the Office of Alumni Relations and, ideally, an elected or nominated chapter committee. The amount of time you spend on your chapter is up to you.

I have decided I want to be a Convenor, what's next?
Once you have decided to become a convenor, contact the Office of Alumni Relations which will supply you with a list of graduates who live in your area. The Office can send out an e-mail to local alumni to gauge their interest in getting involved and participating in a launch event. The e-mail could also enquire whether anyone else was interested in helping you get the chapter started.

Based on the response received from Alumni in your area, the Office of Alumni Relations would assist you with a launch event. At the launch event you would be responsible for asking for volunteers to form a steering committee. This committee would assist you in organising events and with the overall operation of the chapter. However, if there are no volunteers to form a steering committee you are entitled to continue running the chapter on your own as the convenor.

If a committee has been formed, the Office of Alumni Relations would assist you in setting up the first meeting of the committee and would send you the constitution governing the Wits Alumni Association.

Support from the Office of Alumni Relations
The Office of Alumni Relations is there to support and assist you. As a Convenor you are responsible for organising events. However, you are not on your own. Alumni Relations will act as a resource for you to post/e-mail invitations, provide address labels, possibly handle RSVPs if needed, and make suggestions for a programme of activities, functions and events.
