As part of the collaborative links between Prof. Judith Kinnairdand Prof. Jason Ogolaat Venda, 36 Venda third year students visit Wits each November for a one-week optical microscopy course. This is funded from a research project financially supported by Anglo Platinum with 50% matching funding through the government THRIP programme. Grant Bybee and Fabian Francis assisted in the lab to help the enthusiastic Venda students develop their microscope and rock identification skills.
MADE in Alex (Making a difference in Alexandra township) Trust
The Made in Alex Trust offers a Saturday morning development program to Grade 8-10 students from high schools in the Alexandra Township. Topics include Career Guidance, Leadership Skills, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, Motivation and school subjects including Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting, Geography, English and Life Orientation . School subjects are taught by present and former Wits students through Prof. Kim Hein, and include Bjinse Dankert and Strike Molele. Prof Hein is happy to report that EVERY final year student who attending the MADE in Alex program in 2008 successfully completed matriculation.
