| The Structural Chemistry group situated in the Jan Boeyens Structural Chemistry Laboratory in Gate House 8th floor is active in the dynamic area of crystal chemistry, designing new molecular materials and investigating the properties and applications of molecular crystals and metal-organic framework materials. The two staff members active in this area are Professor Demi Levendis and Dr. Manuel Fernandes . The research group has successfully explored new methods for growing and analyzing molecular crystals co-crystals and their polymorphs -including pharmaceutically important molecules. New photoreactive materials, where the solid-state reaction can be carried out in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) manner, have been investigated by the group. We have also used metal ions for the alignment of molecules along a single direction in materials. Structures like these may be of use as molecular wires or in any electronic or optical device where the alignment of molecules is important. The group is active in the design and synthesis of other molecular organic framework materials with interesting properties and applications.
