Welcome to the School of Computational & Applied Mathematics

The School of Computational & Applied Mathematics (CAM) at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwatersrand researches and teaches the application of advanced mathematics and computational techniques to problems in commerce and industry, engineering, finance and economics, society and the medical sciences, the environment and pure sciences – including mathematics, physics, chemistry and astronomy. In 2009, CAM was ranked first in original published research by the Faculty of Science and had five of its top 10 researchers.

CAM is one of the largest in the Faculty of Science in terms of the number of students it teaches. Academic staff members offer a wide variety of courses which train science students to solve practical problems. These include BSc, BSc Honours, BSc in the field of Advanced Mathematics of Finance, MSc by Research and PhD, and study through to BSc Hons is encouraged.

The School has three formal research Centres that loosely coordinate interest groups - the Centre for Differential Equations and Continuum Mechanics, the Centre for Optimization and Control and the new Centre for Numerical Analysis and Computational Mathematics.
