The School of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) within the Faculty of Science at the University of the Witwatersrand proudly offers cutting-edge teaching and research across diverse subject areas. The school has three main focus areas: Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Genetics & Developmental Biology and Microbiology & Biotechnology.

The strength of the Wits programme is based on comprehensive introductory courses complemented by a diverse set of advanced courses, with the result that a BSc degree from MCB provides the student with a sound foundation in the most current fields in Molecular Life Sciences and Biotechnology in the world.

The principal investigators directing research activities are nationally rated by the NRF and receive substantial international recognition and funding. In addition, the School offers excellent laboratory facilities and a superb IT infrastructure. An impressive proportion of students completing their Masters and Doctoral studies are successful in publishing their research findings in high-quality scientific journals, making them internationally sought after. The School is also home to the Protein Structure and Function Research Unit.

Fields of employment open to graduates include both research and industry.
