The Institute of Human Evolution is an interdisciplinary and interfaculty initiative by the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Wits University is one of Africa?s leading research and learning institutions. The many collaborators come from the School of Anatomical Sciences, the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies and the School of Geosciences.

Bernard Price Institute for Palaeontological Research
The BPI is located in the same building as the IHE and various research interests of the two institutes overlaps. Its mission is to collect, conserve, study, interpret and relay (to peers and others) the rich fossil heritage of South and southern Africa.

ASAPA
The Association for Southern African Professional Archaeologists (ASAPA) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that exists for the purpose of establishing, maintaining and promoting archaeology in southern Africa.

Funding from the NRF is largely directed towards academic research, developing high-level human resources and supporting the nation s national research facilities. Many IHE researchers, initiatives and projects are supported by the NRF.

South African Archaeological Bulletin
The Bulletin is the longest established archaeological journal in sub-Saharan Africa, it contains the cutting edge of research on southern Africa. Appearing twice a year, it includes current research, notes by readers and book reviews.

Southern African Humanities
The Southern African Humanities was formerly the Natal Museum Journal of Humanities. Topics of this journal include archaeology, anthropology, history, material culture and heritage studies in southern Africa.

The South African Archaeological Society
The Trans-V l branch of the South African Archaeological Society, aims to encourage and satisfy interest in all aspects of archaeology by bringing members of the public, amateurs and professional archaeologists together. The Society offers regular talks and excursions to important sites as well as opportunities for hands on experience with excavations and processing archaeological finds.

University of Cape Town, Department of Archaeology
The Department of Archaeology at the University of Cape Town has strong research programmes and interests topic such as human evolution, the emergence of modern humans, and the history of hunter-gatherer, pastoralist and farming communities in southern Africa, as well as the archaeology of more recent colonial settlement. In addition, the Department is home to archaeometric and materials research, focusing on paleoanthropology, past environments, early human diets and materials analysis.

University of Pretoria, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology
The University of Pretoria offers under- and postgraduate courses in archaeology. The Department has a specific focus on Cultural Resource Management (CRM), Iron Age Archaeology and Forensic Archaeology.
