SPARC postdoctoral research fellowship at NICD

A SPARC postdoctoral research fellowship is available to join an exciting research team based at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Johannesburg. This is a well-funded group with major international collaborations doing cutting edge research on the antibody response to HIV (see Nature Medicine publication by Moore et al., 2012). The fellowship is aimed at a bioinformatician to analyze deep sequencing data of immunoglobulin gene repertoires from HIV infected African populations. This is a two-year position, renewal after one-year based on performance and progress.

Minimum requirements:

  1. PhD in computational biology obtained within the last 5 years
  2. Published at least 1 paper in a bioinformatics journal
  3. Experience in the analysis of ultra-deep sequencing data
  4. Familiarity with Linux and MAC OS software
  5. Coding in Python/Perl, R and Java

Additional requirements:

Experience with the following would be advantageous:

  1. Experience working with high performance computing environments
  2. Knowledge of immunoglobulin genes 

Duties and Expectations:

  1. Undertake focused and high quality research;
  2. Undertake other activities related to the academic programme and the professional development of the individual (e.g. grant and manuscript writing, presentations and attending meetings/conferences).
  3. Participate in international collaborative projects
