UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

21st Century Institutes

Wits is establishing six prestigious, multi-disciplinary 21st Century Research Institutes at the University:

  • City Institute (City)
  • Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI)
  • Global Change and Sustainability Research Institute (GCSRI)
  • Institute for Wellbeing and Development (IWD)
  • Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB)
  • Wits Mining Research Institute (WMRI)

Five of these have already been formally recognised as 21st Century Institutes by University, with the Institute for Wellbeing and Development commencing with the recognition process in due course.

Wits has a special research niche and a notable scientific, geographical, sociological or historical edge in each of these areas. The 21st Century Institutes will have as their primary focus the production of research of the highest quality. Based on large-scale, multi-disciplinary and complex questions, they will seek to influence the world through generating new knowledge, influencing policy, building strategic partnerships and leading society.
