For students passionate about digital games the two new programs pioneered in a collaboration between Digital Arts and Electrical & Information Engineering offers you an opportunity to work with what you love.
Game design brings together the creative as well as technical aspects of game creation. Both of these perspectives can be studied at Wits through the unique collaborative Game Design courses. This offers students the opportunity to pursue their own interests in Game creation, be it technical or creative.
There are several postgraduate study options available in Digital Arts. Because of the highly interdisciplinary nature of Digital Arts we encourage applications from students who have qualifications in a variety of areas. While a creative arts background is the most common route, we also accept students from Science, Engineering, or Commerce backgrounds.
- For students who already have a FOUR year degree/higher diploma who are looking for an opportunity to learn the art of 3D animation through a combination of theory and production courses together with an independent research project. (This programme can also be taken as a Postgraduate Diploma.)
- For students who already have a FOUR year degree/higher diploma who are looking for an opportunity to learn Interactive Media through a combination of theory and production courses together with an independent research project. (This programme can also be taken as a Postgraduate Diploma.)
MA by Research
- This is an opportunity to develop and implement a supervised research project in the area of Digital Arts.
What makes these Digital Arts programmes unusual is that they offer the best of a University arts course with real world skills. Developed in close consultation with top South African studios and practicing digital artists these courses teach both professional application skills and develop an analytical understanding of either interactive media or 3D animation as aesthetic and commercial forms of communication.
At WSOA, Digital Art students work in a uniquely multi-disciplinary environment, mixing with musicians, fine artists, and actors. Digital Arts graduates also leave with the kind of depth and insight that you can only achieve at an internationally rated research university like Wits.
Work in a dedicated Digital Arts Centre
Digital Arts is housed in a newly refurbished Convent at the heart of the Wits Cultural Precinct.
Students work in specialized computer labs with state-of-art hardware running the latest applications. The Division has an Interactive Media lab, and two Animation labs: one postgraduate lab for 3D Animation and one undergraduate lab for 3D and stop-frame Animation.
MA students are allocated their own workstation for the duration of the course work component. But in all courses class sizes are restricted to ensure all students have sufficient time on the machines and get close personal attention from their instructors and lecturers.
What do you need to apply?
To get into either of these specializations you will need a good (65% average or over) four year degree in any applicable area and a portfolio which demonstrates your creative interests. Work experience can be taken into consideration in lieu of the 4th year of academic qualification; but generally students with this background are encouraged to take the BA Honours in Digital Arts. Applications will be considered from students with a background in creative arts; humanities and social sciences; or computer or informational sciences. University bursaries are available to suitable candidates; but expect the course to cost approximate R20 000 for the year of full-time study.
