The Department has a small but highly trained and motivated staff of both younger and veteran anthropologists, all deeply engaged in studying important questions facing South African and global society.
Areas of specialization include cultural identity, gender studies, development and business, performance, popular culture and media, cultural theory, local politics and land affairs, labour migration, nationalism and ethnicity, just to name the most visible areas of research.
Members of the department frequently undertake fellowships abroad, publish widely and present their work at conferences and as visiting instructors in countries throughout Europe, North America and Africa. In return, many international scholars and students research and teach within the department every year. The Anthropology Society is a group of enthusiastic students who organize special presentations, films, interactive workshops, and field trips. Many students majoring in other disciplines are active members of the Anthropology Society.
