The academic field of Educational Technology entails a number of knowledge practices related to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education and society. At bottom line, it is concerned with the development of the skills of student teachers seeking to integrate ICTs in their classrooms. As a conceptual home for postgraduate teaching and research, it straddles eLearning, which we take to mean teaching, learning and assessment using ICTs, as well as the philosophical, sociological and psychological study of digital technologies in education. As an expansive research field, it ranges across issues of knowledge, information, learning, minds, brains, machines, schools, and the network society in short, the comprehensive theorization and study of modern technology in modern society. The Division of Educational Information Technology in the Wits School of Education, known as EDIT, was established in 2009. Over the next five years, it seeks to become a leading South African research and teaching institution in Educational Technology. Between them, members of the Division have extensive relevant experience in universities, research agencies, teacher training institutions, NGOs and government. The Division works actively in both the professional and academic aspects of Education. In addition to an established Advanced Certificate (ACE) programme in eLearning, it is actively developing a new approach to computer literacy training for undergraduate student teachers, in line with best practices of this kind around the world. The Division also concentrates much of its teaching in postgraduate BEdHons and MEd programmes in the Educational Technology field. It will take in its first cohort of PhD students in 2010.
