The Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) is a professional development course for practising teachers who want to upgrade their qualifications to attain REQV14 occupational status. It is offered over two years of part-time study and there is a choice of specializations, i.e., either a school phase specialization or a specialization in a specific area. 1. School Phase specialisations Foundation Phase The Foundation Phase specialization intends to provide an opportunity for Foundation Phase teachers to develop the necessary skills, knowledge, values, and attitudes needed to facilitate effective learning in the Foundation Phase classroom. Intermediate / Senior Phase Languages and e-Learning This is a dual specialization which allows teachers teaching in grades 4 to 9 the opportunity to specialize in two learning areas. Intermediate/Senior Science and Mathematics This is a dual specialization which allows teachers teaching in grades 4 to 9 the opportunity to specialize in the learning areas of mathematics and science. 2. Specialization in a specific area Arts and Culture Education This specialization focuses on the arts and art practices as specific areas of knowledge and learning essential to the cultural development of pupils in a school environment. Deaf Education Working from the premise that deaf individuals belong to a linguistic and cultural minority group, this specialization recognises Sign Language as a complete and natural language and promotes a bilingual approach (SASL and English) as the philosophical framework to meet the communicative and educational needs of the deaf within inclusive educational settings. English Teaching The English teaching specialization is intended to extend teachers understanding of English home and additional language acquisition/learning and the implications of this for classroom teaching. Learners with Special Needs (LSEN) / Inclusive Education Approaching the concept of inclusive education from a diversity model, this specialization guides educators in developing their understanding of, and dealings with, learners who experience barriers to learning. Science & Physical Science (GET/FET) Both the Natural Science and Physical Sciences specializations are designed to deepen teachers scientific knowledge and skills. Mathematics (GET/FET) This specialization intends to improve the competence of mathematics teachers by extending their knowledge and teaching of mathematics in the classroom. Human Rights and Values In this specialization you are introduced to a theoretical understanding of human rights and values in education, and the policy and legislative framework of education in South Africa. Mathematical Literacy (FET) The mathematics literacy specialization focuses on mathematical literacy and its rationale; number, space, shape and measurement; financial mathematics and functional relationships; and, statistics and probability. School Leadership and Management This specialisation looks at the role of leadership in school improvement and the provision of quality teaching and learning. |
