UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

School of Education

The School of Education, part of the Faculty of Humanities and located in Parktown, Johannesburg, aims to contribute to the improvement of the quality of education received by students in all stages of their schooling and higher education careers. This objective is achieved through the research we do and the programmes on offer.

In our commitment to the professional development of teachers we offer a pre-service teaching qualification for undergraduate students, as well as a certificate in education for postgraduate students who satisfy certain undergraduate subject requirements.

A further dimension of our focus on professional development is teacher upgrading, via undergraduate certificates for in-service teachers in diverse subject areas. We also offer several short courses through our Centre for the Professional Development of Educators.

Complementing our focus on the professional development of teachers, the School of Education is strongly committed to advancing knowledge in all areas of education through a strong research focus at the Honours, Masters and Phd levels of study. To strengthen this research focus, members of staff are encouraged to engage in ongoing research.

The Wits School of Education is home to several NRF-rated researchers and the country’s only A-rated researcher in Education, Prof Jill Adler. It is also home to Mellon Distinguished Scholars and visiting professors from international and local universities.
