Setlhare Science Curriculum Trust

The Setlhare Science Curriculum Trust is a non-profit educational trust. It was registered in 1994 and based at the University of the Witwatersrand, in the RADMASTE Centre.

Setlhare Trust grew out of a curriculum development project based at Sacred Heart College, Johannesburg. That project was set up in 1991 to prepare new kinds of science curricula with an eye to the emerging political and educational changes in South Africa.

In keeping with its Trust Deed, Setlhare has worked in disadvantaged schools, researched science and technology teachers' classroom practice, their use of textbooks, and their assessment of outcomes. Between 2006 to 2010, Setlhare conducted an intensive implementation of the NCS Technology curriculum in a set of primary schools in order to evaluate the assessment and professional development opportunities in this subject.

Parts of the work since 1991 were in collaboration with the Independent Examinations Board, the Gauteng Institute for Curriculum Development, the Gauteng Department of Education and the SA Association of Science and Technology Educators (SAASTE).

Setlhare has set out the Natural Sciences content for Grades 4 to 9 under a contract to the Department of Basic Education in 2008 - 2009.
