| The Humanities Graduate Centre provides access to high-quality seminars and research supervision. A point of connection for local and international students, researchers and employers, it offers an amiable setting and outstanding facilities for graduate study. The Centre draws on the skills of the country’s leading academics in the Humanities and Social Sciences and offers a forum for dynamic interaction and debate. Visiting academics, researchers, student-run seminars and conferences allow for great intellectual interchange. By running postgraduate mentorship programmes, the Centre is designed to support students with little prior experience with the research component of their postgraduate degrees. One of the Centre’s most important functions is to provide an ongoing programme of research training and research capacity development for postgraduate students within Wits’ Faculty of Humanities but also, where appropriate, for other postgraduates emerging from the University of the Witwatersrand. This programme includes an extensive research methodology workshop series as well as leading-edge academic writing and publication workshops. The World of Work Training and Internship Programmes allow students to develop initial experience and to begin to establish the industry contacts necessary to enter the work environment. The internship is an effective method of recruitment for a variety of employers. In developing partnerships with other educational institutions, business, the state and employers, the Graduate Centre aims to assist in producing a new generation of critical graduates, squarely oriented towards the world of work, and equipped to envision, plan for and realise South Africa's future in all its complexity. |
