Faculty of Humanities - Research Vision and Mission:

  • To produce research of the highest quality, ensuring that the Faculty retains and enhances its reputation as one of the leading centres for research and graduate studies in Africa
  • To encourage and enable all academic staff to be research active
  • To produce research of a pure or theoretical nature that contributes to the fundamental understanding of the disciplines in the humanities
  • To produce research of an applied nature that contributes to the solution to problems in the Southern African region particularly, and the continent more generally
  • To produce a culture of intellectual interest and engagement and a community of scholars dedicated to the development of knowledge and the rational appraisal of ideas, and ready to use their intellectual skills and expertise to engage in debate in the public domain

The Vice-Chancellor's Research Award

Nominations are invited for the 2011 Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award, the University’s most prestigious award for research. The purpose of the award is to stimulate research and research related scholarly activities by acknowledging and rewarding a quite exceptional worker who has been engaged in research and more general scholarly activity at the University. The award is open to all full-time academic staff of the University, whose age on 31 December 2011 will be not less than 38 and not more than 65. Submissions may be received from individuals (self-nominations), or from Deans, Academic Heads of School or from Directors/Leaders of URC-recognised research entities. To facilitate the rapid solicitation of referees’ reports, applications should be made in electronic form only (MS Word or PDF) to Iain.burns@wits.ac.za. The closing date for electronic applications to be received at the Research Office is Friday, 5 August 2011 at 17:00. Applications will be considered by the Fellowships Committee on the afternoon of 19 September 2011.
