Bachelor of Health Sciences with honours in Biokinetics
The BHsc (Hons) degree is offered through the Centre for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine in the School of Therapeutic Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences
Entry requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, human movement science or equivalent
- Successful completion of undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses
- Average undergraduate marks of 65% in relevant subjects
- Faculty of Health Sciences admission criteria apply for admission
- Interviews may be called for
Course content:
- Clinical experience
- Research methodology and a research report
- Special populations
- Orthopaedic conditions
- Chronic diseases and disabilities
- Health promotion and wellness
- Professional internship and practice management
- Sports and exercise practicals including fitness testing and conditioning
Duration of degree:
- One year full time study which includes the first of two years of internship
Professional registration:
- Compulsory registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa

MSc (Med) in the field of Sports Medicine
A two year part time postgraduate degree for medical doctors covering aspects of the basic sciences and sports and exercise medicine- specific theory and practice
Admission criteria: A medical degree
Duration: two years part-time with week-long block releases
First year modules:
- Research methods
- Nutrition, healing and rehabilitation
- Exercise, immunity and the environment
- Muscle physiology and metabolism
- Cardiorespiratory physiology and exercise
- Wellness, health promotion and rehabilitation
Second year:
- Management of lower body injuries
- Management of upper body injuries
- Medical conditions and special population groups
- Clinical practicum and portfolio
- Research report
