UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Nov/Dec 2011

With the exciting news that Professor Glenda Gray has been awarded an A-rating by the National Research Foundation, our Faculty now heads the list at Wits, with 6 A-rated researchers (compared to 5 in the Faculty of Science, 3 in Humanities, and 2 in Engineering and the Built Environment). Our researchers continue to receive significant recognition in other spheres too, with Professors Helen Laburn and Viness Pillay inaugurated as members of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and Professors Maureen Coetzee and Hoosen Coovadia elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of South Africa. The future of the Faculty appears to be in good hands too, with Dr Lois Harden receiving the Friedel Sellschop Award, the University’s premier award for outstanding young researchers.

Not surprisingly, there is still much on the go in the Faculty. In this issue, we also report on two new centres of excellence, the launch of a new research unit, innovative ongoing research and more high-impact outputs. After an outstanding year on the research front, our thanks go to Professor Beverley Kramer and her crew in the Research Office, and we wish all a happy holiday season.
