UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

September 2011

In spite of a challenging year, we have good cause to be “Proudly Witsie” this month. No less than three members of our Faculty have been asked to serve as founding members of the South African Young Academy of Science. In addition - although we generally are very proud of our Faculty’s alumni – September sees two reasons for us to brag (see below and page 2), and current members of Faculty have only added to our glow.

Our research outputs continue to be of great relevance and high quality, as evidenced by the papers recently published by Professors Lesley Scott and Wayne Grayson. Exciting journeys lie ahead - two Wits Health Sciences teams are to be involved in large collaborative studies, both ambitious and potentially world-changing investigations (page 5). This month, additional research activities such as the Therapeutic Sciences Research Day and the Postdoctoral Symposium provided yet further opportunity to celebrate the Faculty’s outstanding research.
