
| The Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit (MMRU) was established in 2000 as a joint research unit of the Medical Research Council of South Africa (MRC), the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) and the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). In 2004, the MMRU became incorporated into the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research (CBTBR), which is hosted jointly with Molecular Biology and Human Genetics at Stellenbosch University. The CBTBR was one of six new Centres of Excellence created by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the National Department of Science and Technology in 2004 and was the only one awarded in the field of Health Sciences.
