REACH is GRIPPing - Translating research for policy makers and the broader public is a key step in getting research into policy and practice (GRIPP), and is increasingly important for donors. The Centre for Health Policy/School of Public Health recently co-hosted a mini-symposium for health service providers and researchers on researching equity in access to health care (REACH) in South Africa.

CHP has launched a series of mini-symposia on topical health policy and systems research issues to promote networking and engagement between researchers and policy makers.

Improvements in health outcomes in Africa will depend in part on stronger health systems, yet there is a lack of African research to inform such progress. The Consortium for Health Policy and Systems Analysis in Africa (CHEPSAA) was established in 2011 to address accelerated development of relevant research by building sustainable African capacity to produce and use high quality health policy and systems research.

CHP's Dr Matthew Chersich attended the country experts workshop and consortium meeting of the MASCOT Project in San José, Costa Rica from 12 - 16 March, where he met the Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Dr Daisy Corrales.

CHP awarded DST/NRF South African Research Chair at Wits The Department of Science and Technology has awarded the Centre for Health Policy a Chair in Health Policy and Systems, hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand and administered by the National Research Foundation (NRF).

CHP staffer wins award for Best First Time Presenter at PHASA 2011 Pascalia Munyewende won the award for the Best First Time Presenter at the annual conference of the Public Health Association of SA, held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 28-30 November 2011.

The launch of the special edition of the international Journal of Public Health Policy dedicated to the Centre for Health Policy (CHP) at Wits highlights the stature and relevance of the Centre which celebrated its 24th anniversary on 26 July 2011.

Laetitia Rispel, adjunct professor in the Centre for Health Policy and the scientific director of the Health Policy Research Group, was among nine South African nurse researchers to ever be inducted into the 2011 international Hall of Fame for Research Excellence in Nursing.
