Aims of the School of Public Health

To produce skilled public health practitioners, appropriately trained for South African and African conditions, while at the same time nurturing independent academic endeavour designed to advance the acquisition of new knowledge.

  • To develop and expand links with public health related disciplines within the university and beyond.
  • To pursue efforts to improve the understanding of the complex processes of health sector reform.
  • To develop the interface between Public Health and Clinical Practice, with special emphasis on Clinical Epidemiology, Occupational Medicine, Communicable Diseases and Primary Health Care.

In developing its academic programmes the School promotes the areas of policy and advocacy, health economics, research methodology, social and behavioural sciences, management, human rights, ethics and capacity development.
