Haematology - Chris Hani Baragwanath

The haematology department continues to provide a comprehensive laboratory service to the hospital and surrounding clinics. Most of the specialised tests that have been centralised to the Johannesburg hospital and medical school are still being referred there as a cost effective measure, but this is reviewed on a regular basis. CD4 counts are now being done on site, and special coagulation tests are currently being validated to be included in our repertoire. The pathologist and registrars at the laboratory avail themselves for consultations by clinicians at CH Bara Hospital, where an excellent rapport exists between the 2 groups.

Academic activities:

a) Training and teaching
i. An average of 5 student technologists rotate through the department as part of their curriculum at technical college.
ii. An in-house CPD accredited teaching programme for technical staff is in place.
iii. Weekly tutorial for registrars in the subject of haemoglobin disorders.
b) Clinical activity
Clinical haematology training forms a large part of the registrars? activities.This includes active participation in:
i. Non-oncology outpatient clinic- Mondays; Oncology outpatient clinic- Tuesdays,
ii. Grand ward round- Wednesday afternoons,
iii. Registrar case presentations- Thursdays
c)Multi-disciplinary discussion seminars
i. Weekly with the paediatric oncologists
ii. Fortnightly with adult haematologists
iii. Fortnightly with radiologists
