Professor Yosuf Veriava - Chairman
Professor Veriava (better known as Joe) has had a long and illustrious medical career and he has made significant contributions to bioethics in South Africa. As one of the 5 famous South African doctors who challenged the Apartheid Government over the death of Steve Biko, Professor Veriava is well-known for his commitment to the values of justice and fairness in medicine. Professor Veriava spent many years heading up the department of internal medicine at Wits University. He is still with the University in a more informal context, and he is pivotal to the functioning of the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics.
