Divisions: Paediatric Surgery - Patient statistics

The department of Paediatric Surgery services the Johannesburg and Reef areas. The hospitals serviced are the Johannesburg General Hospital and C.H. Baragwanath hospital, covering a population of approximately 7 million people.

At the C.H. Baragwanath division approximately 2000 in patients are seen per year and at the Johannesburg General division approximately 1200 patients per year.

Each unit sees and treats between 100 - 200 cases per month; aged between birth and 10/16 yrs. The diseases seen fall under the following categories:

  1. General Paediatric Surgery including Trauma
  2. Neonatal Surgery
  3. Paediatric Urology
  4. Paediatric Oncology
  5. Paediatric Thoracic (not Cardiac) Surgery
  6. Paediatric Neurosurgeery - renal tube anomalies/Hydrocephalus

The Major workload entails:

  • Surgically amenable congenital anomalaies
  • Surgery of benign and malifnant tumours
  • Urology
  • Paediatric Trauma cases including burns
  • The acute surgical abdomen

Emphasis has moved from a mainly inpatient surgical service to that of an ambulant/day case based service.
