The Faculty of Dentistry was formed in 1926 out of the Faculty of Medicine. From January 1, 1997 the two faculties were amalgamated once more as the Faculty of Health Sciences. The old dental faculty is now the School of Oral Health Science, an equal partner with the other schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Comprehensive, hands-on clinical teaching coupled to a research ethos is offered within the School, in the Wits Dental Hospital situated in Block 2, level 5, of the CM Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Nongraduate Diploma
- Oral Hygiene - 2 years full-time study.
Undergraduate degree
- Bachelor of Dental Science - 5 years study plus 1 year community service.
Postgraduate Degrees
Clinical specialities - full-time study:
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Community Dentistry [min. 3 years]
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Maxillofacial and Oral surgery [min. 4 years]
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Oral Medicine and Periodontology [min. 3 years]
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Oral Pathology [min. 3 years]
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Orthodontics [min. 3 years]
- Master of Dentistry in the branch of Prosthodontics [min. 3 years]
The MDent degrees are specialist clinical qualifications requiring course work, practical training and research.
Academic higher qualifications - full-time or part-time study:
- Master of Science in Dentistry by research
- Master of Science in Dentistry by course work and research
- Doctor of Philosophy
- Doctor of Science in Dentistry
The MSc(Dent) and PhD degrees are research qualifications, which may be obtained through full-time or part-time research and study, while the DSc(Dent) degree is awarded for published work.
