UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP)

If you already have a degree and would like to branch into medicine, then the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) may be for you. The GEMP offers an entry point to the third year of the MB BCh degree at Wits for suitably qualified graduates who are interested in qualifying as medical doctors.

What is the GEMP?

The Wits MB BCh degree has an outstanding reputation worldwide and is a highly sought after qualification. Entry into the MB BCh has traditionally been at first-year level but, with the introduction of the GEMP, successful applicants in possession of a university degree can enter the MB BCh at the third year level.

The MB BCh years III, IV, V and VI comprise integrated multi-disciplinary and clinical courses and, as each year of study is compulsory, no student can transfer or be admitted into the degree beyond the thirds year of study. The first two years of the MB BCh degree are made up of courses in the natural sciences, life sciences and social sciences that are basic to medicine. Students who enter the MB BCh degree directly from school will spend their first two years studying these courses (see Studying Medicine).
