CUBES & ACC South African City Studies Workshop on Empirical Studies 19-20 November 2012

South African City Studies

Workshop on Empirical Studies, Theory and Criticism

19th and 20th November 2012

Organised by ACC at UCT and CUBES at Wits

Hosted by CUBES at Wits

Supported by the Wits city institute project

Following two South African City Studies Conferences organised by CUBES and ACC in 2009 and 2011, and a Workshop in May 2010 designed for intensive work on writing and criticism (held at ACC), the 2012 Workshop brought together emerging and established urban researchers - from a variety of disciplinary contexts including planning, architecture, geography, anthropology, political studies, economics, and from contexts of practice in and outside the university.

The workshop was once again intended to help participants enrich their writing through supportive and positive criticism, encounter with less familiar conceptual fields, and juxtaposition of diverse empirical subjects. The workshop format encouraged intensive discussions on cities, and substantive feedback on the work of each workshop participant. Doctoral candidates and emerging researchers across the wide field of city studies predominated, whilst some more established scholars dedicated to further extending their horizons contributed discussion. Given limitations of space and time, participation was limited to two dozen paper authors. Consensus among participants : a highly successful workshop, to be repeated.

The workshop was organized by Sîan Butcher (visiting researcher, Wits), Christine Bischoff (Wits City institute project), Sarah Charlton and Alan Mabin (Wits School of Architecture and Planning).

CITY SEMINARS

1ST QUARTER 2010

Memory in the City (Part 2)
In 2009, CUBES provided a platform for a very successful seminar series on the theme of Memory in the City. The series drew speakers and discussants from a wide range of disciplines, including history, planning, architecture, heritage, literature and art history, and built up a regular audience providing a supportive environment for lively discussion and testing of ideas. A few presenters were not able to present last year, and so we will continue with this theme for the first block of the 2010 academic year, from February until late March/April.
Please see provisional programme below (subject to change please call/ email or check the CUBES website for up-to-date information). Seminars take place on Tuesdays at 4pm, in the First Floor Seminar Room, John Moffat building, Wits East campus.
