At the undergraduate level there are three ways to study economics:
This is the conventional mainstream course taken by most students. Economics I is compulsory for all BCom and BAccSci students, but other students may wish to continue with Economics II and Economics III in order to achieve an Economics major.
This is a specialist route taken by students doing the Bachelor of Economic Science degree (BEconSci) or by those who wish to get a more mathematical and statistical economics background. It is one of the ways to qualify as an actuarial scientist. Economic Science is offered at the third year level, after having taken Economics I and Economics II, and allows students to take mathematical economics and econometrics at honours and masters level.
This course offers economics to students who lack the mathematical requirements for the mainstream economics course. It is aimed at students in Humanities or from other faculties, and is not open to BCom students. The course is one-year and does not allow for further study in economics.
