UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

About Us

Situated in Johannesburg in the economic and commercial heart of the country on the Wits University Braamfontein Campus West, the School of Economic and Business Science (SEBS) focuses on business and economic science and services a broad range of mostly commerce students.

A large School that encompasses many disciplines, SEBS is involved in research across a broad range of areas. We house various research institutes including the African Microeconomic Research Umbrella (AMERU); the Corporate Strategy and Industrial Development (CSID) research programme; the Institutions and Political Economy Group (IPEG); and the Macro-Financial Analysis Group.

From a teaching perspective, our  undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree includes a broad spectrum of courses, from finance, insurance and information systems to marketing and human resources management. This affords students some degree of specialisation, depending on the area of business in which they are most interested.

We also offer an undergraduate degree in Economic Science (BEconSci) – a specialist qualification that provides students with skills in  mathematical and statistical techniques used by some economists and actuarial scientists.

At the postgraduate level, all six disciplines in the school – Economics; Finance; Insurance and Risk; Information Systems; Management and Human Resource Management; and Marketing – offer a full suite of postgraduate qualifications, from Honours through to Masters and Doctoral degrees.
