Bursaries and Scholarships for LLB students for 2012

Bell Dewar Scholarships (Penultimate year students)
Bell Dewar is offering scholarships which are open to all penultimate-year LLB students.

The following criteria will apply:

  • Students must be registered for the penultimate year of the LLB studies in 2012.
  • An average of 65% and over for the years of study already completed.
  • Financial need is not a criterion but may be a consideration.
  • The recipient will be required to participate in vacation work programmes offered to him/her by Bell Dewar.
  • Once the recipient has graduated successfully, he/she will be required to accept articles of clerkship at Bell Dewar if offered.
  • The successful candidate will be a person who, in the opinion of Bell Dewar, has the potential to become an effective attorney at Bell Dewar.  The candidate should be a balanced individual demonstrating leadership qualities, an interest in community issues/projects and strong self-motivation.

Bowman Gilfillan Scholarships
Bowman Gilfillan is generously offering scholarships LLB students who will be studying at a recognised South African university that is acceptable to Bowman Gilfillan.

The scholarships will be awarded to South African students with appropriate academic records who are in need of financial assistance, have the necessary drive to succeed and the intention to practice law in a commercial law firm.

Brink Cohen Le Roux Scholarship (Penultimate year students)
Brink Cohen Le Roux Inc, a leading commercial law firm in Johannesburg, endows an annual scholarship of R25,000 to a penultimate year Wits LLB student who intends practicing law in a commercial firm.

The firm specialises in commercial law (including mergers and acquisitions, competition law, communications law, and banking and finance law), commercial litigation, administrative law, health and safety law, environmental law, labour law and employee benefits law.

  • The scholarship would pay the tuition fee for one year of a full time student who is in his or her pre-final year of LLB studies. This would be subject to a maximum amount of R25,000 for the year.
  • The student must be South African, from a disadvantaged community and of proven academic ability,ideally in one or more of the fields in which the firm specialises.
  • The beneficiary of the scholarship would be given the opportunity to undertake vacation work at Brink Cohen Le Roux and to maintain contact with the firm during the course of the year.
  • Although not guaranteed, Brink Cohen Le Roux would consider employing the scholarship recipient as a Candidate Attorney on completion of his/her degree, depending on academic progress and achievement, and the existence of suitable vacancies. The student would be under no obligation to take up such employment, but if offered, it is hoped that he or she would seriously consider such a possibility.

DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Scholarship (Penultimate year students)
DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, a leading firm of attorneys, grants an annual scholarship to a South African LLB student in his/her penultimate year of study. Preference will be given to post-graduate LLB students.  The scholarship will be a minimum amount of R15,000 per annum towards study fees.

  • Each application for a bursary is considered on its own merits taking into account the following criteria:
    • financial need
    • academic performance
    • proven excellence in any other field
  • The beneficiary of the scholarship must be a South African citizen or permanent resident in South Africa;
  • The beneficiary may be required to attend the DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr vacation programme for law students, and may be required to meet representatives of the firm from time to time;
  • Although it is a one-year scholarship, DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr may at its discretion extend the scholarship for an additional year and
  • The scholarship is subject to DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr having first right of refusal with regard to articles of clerkship.

Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Scholarships (Penultimate year students)
Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs is offering two scholarships of R30,000 each for Black South African students in their penultimate year of LLB studies in 2012.

The scholarships will be awarded to Black students who have displayed well above average academic achievement.  The recipients will be expected to attend the Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs vacation work programme.  The recipients will be required to give Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs the right of first refusal in respect of articles of clerkship.

Eversheds Scholarship (Penultimate year students)
Eversheds is awarding a scholarship to the value of R25,000 per annum in 2012.  The scholarship is open to all South African LLB students who are in their penultimate year in 2012.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • A consistent academic record
  • Evidence of being an all-rounder (for example being a participant in extra-curricular activities, such as sport/community/cultural/volunteer or paid employment activities)
  • A need for financial assistance

The successful candidate will be expected to attend a vacation programme at Eversheds and may be asked to enter a contractual arrangement to serve articles with the firm.

Fluxmans Attorneys Scholarships (Penultimate year students)
Fluxmans Attorneys are very generously offering three LLB scholarships to South African students in their penultimate year of study at a value of R30,000 each.  Each of the scholarships has slightly different criteria.

  • Scholarship No. 1 is open to previously disadvantaged students in their penultimate year who have achieved an average of 65% or more.
  • Scholarship No. 2 is open to all students in their penultimate year of study (irrespective of race) who have achieved an average of 75% or more.
  • Scholarship No. 3 is open to previously disadvantaged students in their penultimate year of study with financial need who have achieved an average of 60% or more.
  • Notwithstanding the above criteria for the three scholarships, Fluxmans Attorneys reserve the right to award the scholarships to any students of their choice.

Applicants for all three scholarships should be able to demonstrate evidence of being an all-rounder (for example, being a participant in extra-curricular activities such as sport, community work, cultural activities, or voluntary or paid employment).

Successful candidates may be asked to attend a vacation programme at Fluxmans Attorneys and/or may be asked to enter a contractual arrangement to serve articles with the firm.

Read Hope Phillips Open Scholarship (Penultimate year students)
Read Hope Phillips Thomas & Cadman Inc., a corporate commercial law firm based in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, is offering a two year open scholarship having an aggregate value of up to R35,000 to one or more qualifying law student(s) at a university in South Africa.

A scholarship will be awarded to one or more Black South African stduents for his/her penultimate year of undergraduate law studies, to cover his/her penultimate and, subject to satisfactory ongoing performance, conduct, attitude and demeanour, his/her final year of law studies.  Applicants should have a strong academic record, the necessary drive to succeed and the intention to practice law in a commercial firm.  Financial need is not determinative but may be taken into account.

The following conditions and criteria apply:

  • The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed as part of the selection process.
  • All subjects are passed with a satisfactory mark and studies are completed in the prescribed period.
  • Recipients must conduct themselves in such a manner that does not bring the reputation of their university or Read Hope Phillips into disrepute.
  • Recipients may be required to attend the annual Read Hope Phillips vacation programme, and to accept articles of clerkship with Read Hope Phillips if offered.
  • Recipients will be expected to meet with Read Hope Phillips from time to time and regular progress reports will be forwarded to Read Hope Phillips by their university.
  • Payments will be made to and disbursed by their university against invoices for residence and/or tuition.

Webber Wentzel Bursaries  (Penultimate year students)
Webber Wentzel is awarding generous bursaries to LLB students in their penultimate (pre-final) year of study, at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Each application should include the following documents:

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please ensure that you meet the specified criteria of the scholarship or bursary for which you are applying. DO NOT apply for a scholarship aimed at a particular year of study if you are not in the specified year in 2012. (Penultimate year is the year before the final year.)

Applications should be submitted to Ms Cindy Petersen, Room 13, School of Law, Oliver Schreiner School of Law Building, West Campus, WITS by Monday 20February 2012, unless specified otherwise.

Submit a separate application for each scholarship, stating the category where applicable. Each application should include the following:

  1. Letter motivating why you should be the beneficiary, highlighting financial need and community involvement WHERE applicable.
  2. Curriculum vitae which includes your student number.
  3. Certified copy of academic results.
  4. Certified copy of identity document.
  5. Two letters of reference.
  6. Contact telephone number(s)

In addition please note the specific preferences and requirements eg matric certificates, application forms, AND application process, of each organization.  INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE REJECTED.

Applicants are required to sign a form with Ms Cindy Petersen authorising the University of the Witwatersrand to make their marks available to a third party.

Please note that only one scholarship may be accepted.
