Transparency in the Extractive Industries

The Mandela Institute at Wits School of Law is presenting a workshop on Transparency in the Extractive Industries.

South Africa is rich in minerals and with good governance the exploitation of these resources can generate large revenues to foster growth and reduce poverty.  However, when governance is not there, it might result in poverty, corruption and conflict.  The workshop will be presenting sector perspectives on the extractive industries in relation to foreign direct investment, the sustainable use of resources, use of revenues, political and economic implications and transparency.

Presenters and panelists include Peter Leon, Head of the Mining, Energy and Natural Resources Group at Webber Wentzel, Markus Schrader, Head of Swiss Economic Co-operation and Development (SECO), Alan Fine, Public Affairs Manager, AngloGold Ashanti, Peter Temane, Chairperson of the South African Mining Development Association and Managing Director of Masingita Mining, Professor Fred Cawood, Head of the Wits School of Mining Engineering, Lisa Chamberlain, Acting Head of Programmes at the Centre for Applied Legal Studies and Member of the Mining, Environment and Community Alliance.  Representatives from the Department of Mineral Resources and National Union of Mineworkers will also be participating.
