Research Interests

Elsje Bonthuys joined the Law School as a lecturer in 1999 and was appointed professor of law in 2007. She teaches the Law of Contract, Family Law and Gender and the Law. She previously held a lecturing post at the University of Stellenbosch and practised as a member of the Cape Bar. Scholarships from the HSRC, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Association of Commonwealth Universities enabled her to read for a PhD at the University of Cambridge, which was conferred in March 2000. 

Current research interests include family law, gender law and sexual orientation.
