  1. Why study at Wits School of Law?

    The programme offerings of the School of Law’s are highly prized in the marketplace for their high standards of academic excellence and practical relevance. The wide range of subjects taught by acknowledged experts allows students to develop themselves into world-class legal specialists.

  2. Available Programmes

    Prospective students should apply for the B Com with Law (CB013) or the BA with Law. Click here for the more information.

    The following programmes are available:

    The 2-year LLB programme. Requirements: a first award (degree), usually a BA or a BCom, where law has been taken as a unit set (major subject);
    The 3-year programme. Requirements: a first award, usually a BA or BCom, where no law units have been completed.
  3. Admission Requirements

    • The Bachelor of Law (LLB) will be held in abeyance from 2015.
    • Students must apply to study law through a BA/BCom majoring in law.
    • To qualify to major in law students must have 43 NSC points.
    • After completing a BA/BCom majoring in law students can then proceed to do a 2 year LLB degree.
    • Students are also able to complete a BA/BCom/BSc degree without law and then apply to study the 3 year LLB degree.

During the undergraduate BA or BCom degree

During the initial undergraduate BA or BCom degree, students wishing to go on to do the two-year LLB must complete the following law units:

  • Family Law
  • Constitutional Law
  • Constitutional Law: The Bill of Rights

1st Year

The Three-year LLB

The three-year LLB programme is aimed at students who already have an undergraduate degree but do not have any law credits. It is therefore best suited to students who make a later decision to pursue a career in law, following the completion of their first undergraduate degree. 

The three-year LLB programme is also sometimes chosen by students who wish to specialise in a particular area of law. For example, they may wish to become a specialist in patent law or forensic medical law, and might have attained a degree in engineering/science or medicine first.
